The Black Necropolis is the name of a 45 square mile area in the northernmost part of the Phoenix Protectorate. The area is home to a massive fortified graveyard, with tombs and mausoleums created from obsidian and black onyx. It is estimated that over a million dead are interred here, though there is no knowledge of who they were. Some speculate that they are the remains of Progenitors, others insist that this is a monument created by the ancestors for the victims of some forgotten tragedy.
The Phoenix Knights patrolled the area regularly, watchful of wandering undead who may seek to raise the beings that lay within. That is, until the day the horde landed. Details are sparse on where the the marauding army of the undead came from, but that arrived in a large enough number to shatter any patrol that attempted to stop them. They breached the gates lead by a powerful Lich and his generals, each one of them some undead monstrosity or another. by the time the full force of the Phoenix Knights came to bear on the invaders, the damage was done. The undead army was now over a million strong and had fortified the ramparts of the Necropolis and with the aid of forgotten magics, easily broke the Phoenix vanguard and added the fallen to their ranks.
The Battle of the Black Necropolis was the first battle of the War for the Homeland.
